I am Jes and I am an artist, art lover and art educator living in Spring, Texas, which is a northwest suburb of Houston. I have been teaching middle school art for over 15 years and as a result I have learned a heck of a lot and have explored many different mediums with my students. This opportunity of continual exposure to a variety of mediums has led my art practice to be incredibly varied in materials. I work with oil, acrylic, gouache, and watercolor paints as well as colored pencil, graphite, markers and ink.
I fluctuate between different mediums based on my mood and the intent of the artwork and I sometimes combine multiple materials in my artworks. My in-home studio was once a dining room, but has the most delicious afternoon light that streams in the windows and is perfect for painting. I am absolutely and positively devoted to art and I delight in collecting the work of other artists.
I have a strong connection to and appreciation of writing and in particular poetry and song lyrics. I will sometimes include text that resonates with me within my pieces. I myself am not a weaver of words and I swoon over the way the right combination of text can softly settle deep within my bones, creating warmth and recognition within my soul.
I study people and I paint people. I do a lot of watching and observing, noticing delicate color shifts, textures and the way the light falls. Faces and expressions are fascinating, and with every painting I fight towards recreating the radiance and glow of the human spirit and the story of the moment. I take a lot of photos, a whole lot of them actually, and work many of my paintings off of these collected images.
I also enjoy capturing the charm and essence of places and buildings I love. Spending my formative years in Binghamton New York, I have an incredible fondness and love for the city and every year I paint or draw a few scenes near and dear to my heart. Other places I have painted: Galveston, Texas Tech, Napa, Coronado and New Orleans - all wonderful spots.
My days are incredibly busy with teaching, my family, and the ins and outs of life. I have three energetic, magical and gorgeous daughters who are basically the same age and one adorable and supportive husband. When I’m not doing the above mentioned jobs you might find me in bed reading fiction, drinking coffee and listening to music or pulling weeds in the garden while grounding myself and gulping in the fresh air.
